“Blessed is the Fruit” / 15th C. Book of Hours page

C. 1475 Flanders Belgium

Illuminated, handwritten page on vellum

This rare tiny handwritten page on vellum was created in Flanders, Belgium c.1475 and part of a *book of hours. It features a hand illuminated letter “O” with flowers. The Latin text refers to Mary the mother of Jesus stating “Blessed is the fruit of your womb.” It references the burden she has to bear of her son, the God made flesh.

It is presented with acid free corners on a piece of conservation acrylic so that the text on the back may also be viewed. It is matted with a Belgian linen mat edged with a gold leaf fillet. The frame is of a medium burl wood veneer with beaded shoulder and ornate gold lip.

*A Book of Hours is a personalized medieval hand written devotional book, popular from the 14th–16th centuries among wealthier laypeople, designed for praying at eight specific times of day. These illuminated manuscripts typically contain the “Hours of the Virgin,” a calendar, psalms, and prayers.
